One month into the WordPress PostaDay 2011 challenge…31 Days and approximately 18,000 words later…I’m still going strong!
I had no real idea of what to expect when I signed up for this challenge.
My original intention was to learn how to set up my blog and to post a simple daily celebration message.
I asked my lovely daughter (who works in web design) to help me set it up and was met with the usual response of; ‘Oh mum…why don’t you just read the instructions on the Word Press site…after all – that is what they are there for!’
Of course she was right – and this is exactly what I did.
I had been hoping that she would have given me a crash course on the subject, lead me through some short cuts and share some trade secrets with me – instead of forcing me to plough through so many complicated instructions (for a technophobe like me anyway!)
With no other choice, I settled down with said instructions and spent a few days learning what I needed to do to set up a basic blog. While everyone else around me was sleeping off the excesses of their New Year’s Eve celebrations; I was writing my first post.
Pressing the ‘publish’ button, I felt like I was pressing the button on a whole new adventure. I was excited…and terrified…in equal measure!
I was now officially a ‘Blogger’ – and part of a whole new world!
Apart from a few loyal friends – bless you all – I had no idea whether anyone would even want to read my posts…let alone feel moved enough to leave me a comment…or subscribe to my blog.
I was amazed to find that within the first few days the blog had an energy and a life of its own. To discover that comments were being left by people from all around the world was such a thrill!
One month on and I’m even more excited to see how this journey is going to unfold over the coming year.
I am determined to succeed in this challenge; even more so now that I realise just how huge an undertaking this is going to be.
The greatest challenge is not the actual writing, as this is a real pleasure and brings me great joy. It is my time management skills – or lack of them – that are proving to be my greatest adversary.
While I’m happily sitting at my laptop for hours on end – writing or researching my next post, reading other blogs, clicking through to links for recommended websites, responding to comments, obsessively checking the stats to see if anyone has visited during the previous 10 minutes(!), or exchanging ideas with other bloggers…
…the rest of my life is beginning to fall by the wayside.
Letters and paperwork are growing into large piles; my inbox hasn’t been cleared for weeks; my social life is taking place mainly on line; my ‘to do list’ is growing longer by the day and I’ve not seen my bed before 3am for ages!
I need to get on top of this and put some discipline into this process. I am addicted…and need to do a ‘blog detox’.
Trouble is – my blog has become my ‘blog baby’ and I want to nurture and 
protect it above all else (or maybe I should just buy a kitten – much lower maintenance!)
What has truly delighted and surprised me has been connecting with so many lovely people from all around the world.
The blogger community is a wonderfully supportive one and whenever one of us has been flagging – or losing momentum – someone always steps up with words of support and encouragement to keep us on track.
I have learnt so much over the past few weeks and my world has opened up overnight. I’ve joined a community of people who really care about each other and it feels so good to be here.
From Classy Rose’s wonderful blogging tips and easy to understand technical know how; Papa Joe’s warmth and gloriously simple words of love and wisdom; Eliz’s daily posts of mirth and motivation; to Piglet’s ‘toilet’ humour and fantastic photos…each of you…and many others who’ve stopped by to say ‘hello’ along the way … have brought so much joy into my life that I don’t know how to thank you.
You have all freely given of yourselves and for whatever you have chosen to share with me, I am truly grateful. Blogging has brought me a wealth of unexpected gifts and I look forward to continuing my journey with you all.
I may well be sitting here in a year’s time with my neglected house falling down around my ears, suffocating under piles of dirty laundry, gazing wistfully at food that has become fossilized and looking in the mirror with waist length hair turned completely white…but if I still have my laptop and my blogging friends to nurture and sustain me…I will know that it will have been a year well spent.
Now that will be a real cause for celebration!

My laundry is piling up, the yard is a mess and my hubby and dog are feeling neglected – I guess some time management is in order.

Aye, aye ladies… I see a pending revolt! 🙂 Truth is that the Daily Challenge created an unusual opportunity for us to connect with a lot of people on WordPress.
I’ve been blogging over two years now and it wasn’t like this at all. The norm for most new bloggers is silence and darkness until you slowly build some friendships.
We are fortunate for this time and I can assure you that over time, things will settle down, people will change direction, choose other paths, and the rest will plod along doing their thing.
I’m glad for the new friendships and my decision to comment on all the blogs on my team is a lot of work but I know time will sort it out … and slowly it has.
Since I do want to say hello next time I’m in London, I do hope you’ll stick around Julie. Don’t worry too much. Sometimes I add poems or pictures and those help me kick back a bit… 🙂

Hi Eliz – I’m sure we won’t see a revolt…will we ladies?
Having said that, there have been many moments over the past few weeks when I’ve asked myself what on earth I’ve started here. I am still seriously considering changing to Postaweek unless I can get on top of the daily posts by making them simplier. The question is…if they are too simple, will anyone want to read them? I’m considering posting short posts Mon-Fri, with longer posts on the weekend when people often have more time to read.
This way, I will have more time to fully support those in our little group which have begun to mean so much to me.
I know I keep banging on about this, but I am a really intrigued as to how everyone is keeping up to speed whilst maintaining the quality and consistancy of their writing. Have you all given up things in your life to make space for this blog…or are you also trying to fit it all it and existing on a few hours sleep? I’d love to know more and perhaps get some feedback as to what your expectations are from each other’s posts…

Great question Julie. Personally, I’m new here and have been posting whatever comes to mind, short or long. I set out with an audience of only one in mind, Cassie. But I’ve been blessed with a wonderful circle of friends on the way.
So where does the time come from? Gotta admit I’m not sure. It’s the end of the month now and I love being on here. But I’m going to have to do some serious self evaluation to see if it’s an infatuation with something new, or a growing addiction. Can’t say for sure, so I’ll be optimistic for now.
Personally, I really do love reading all of my friends blogs and their comments and catching up on old posts and … But there really isn’t time for all of it. And to tack a post onto there, don’t know what you’re complaining about honestly. You’ve been putting out quality that I envy. I really don’t know where you’re getting the time for it.
For me, if I’ve got something comes to mind, I ramble on about it and try to cut it off if it starts growing over 500 words. And if I don’t have anything to say, I stop by, say hi and try not to go anywhere near the 500 word mark. I still find my friends dropping by. Some say “hi”. Some hit the like button. And some just read.
I’m happy just knowing they’re there. If I had something great like you I might be looking at my statistics. But as long as Cassie’s happy when she phones, I’ve met my goal. All my new friends are a bonus round!

I just love the idea that you are writing with just one person in mind. Cassie is a very lucky girl and she must be so proud of you – and rightly so!
Your writing is beautiful. It is warm, humorous and from the heart. The best type of writing. I can see a book coming on, “Everyday Words of Wisdom – by Papa Joe”…dedicated to Cassie – my (your) inspiration. What a wonderful gift; for her…and for your ever growing circle of fans. Go to it!
And thanks so much for your words of encouragement. When I read other people’s blogs which are so inspiring and so well written, I wonder what on earth people see in mine. Maybe I will start writing with an audience of one in mind and just enjoy the process instead of ‘sweating the small stuff’ as you so rightly point out.

Thanks for your kind words about a book. But if I please Cassie, I’m happy. Friends are such a wonderful bonus that I must admit, I’m writing for you all pretty much as much as Cassie. Since Cassie likes what I’m posting, it’s a win-win. And if any of you, Cassie or not, have something you’d like me to write, I’ll be happy to ramble.
That’s the catch though. Any book to come from my words would be rambling. I’d be delighted if it was enjoyable rambling. But it would still ramble. You’d be taken hither and yon across some old memories or maybe the occasional rant. Might wind up with a bowling score or something on a great liniment. Could even be something you may read. Just be a heck of a thing to try to follow or explain. 🙂
You, on the other hand my dear, have something truly special. You’ve got a theme that *is* you (wish I knew how to make those darned italics there. Asterisks will have to do.) It unifies anything you put on your pages wonderfully. Every post is a celebration. Add to it that you’re attractive, (still think you’d look good for 35! Honest!), vivacious and so obviously full of life, I’d be surprised if I were really the only one you make feel young.
When I understand that both the new William Shatner sit-com “$#*! My Dad Says” and the Meryl Streep movie, “Julie & Julia” started as blogs, I’m not just blowing smoke when I say that I could see you taking off like that too. So when I mention your stats, I’m not kidding.
It would be difficult to aim for though. And if you did, you’d be setting yourself up for disappointment if things didn’t work out. So if you write (and read) in our little blogging-clutch aiming to pleaes only one person – you – then you can’t go too wrong. By the end of the year you’ll have 356 wonderful memories. Now that’s a book!
Print your posts. Add some nice photos. And you’ll have a unique celebration album to remember your 50th year. AND a wonderful start to your 51st!
As long as you’re getting fun out of your blog and friends here, I don’t think you can go too wrong. I think we’ll all have to be careful about the addictive aspects. But we’re also lucky, as has been pointed out, that we came in when we did. A couple of years ago and we probably wouldn’t be having nearly as much fun and may have even given up before we hit our stride. The WP challenge seems to have made all the difference.
Please consider continuing to post every day. I think it will be marvellous even if you don’t feel it’s a “special” post every time. Just tag it to death anyway and maybe you’ll gather a bunch of followers who will carry you right on through to that lucrative TV/Movie deal! 🙂
(BTW, you can see now why your blog has substance and mine rambles. I’ve just offered you over 500 words just in this comment. I’d ask you ‘Isn’t getting old wonderful?’ But you’re too young to know yet. 😉 )

As for the Julie & Julia ‘thing’…sadly, I think this idea has run its course and I would have no expectations in that direction as the concept has probably gone past its ‘sell by’ date by now. Would have been nice…but timing is everything!
I’m just loving the experience for itself…as well as enjoying the company of my special fellow bloggers. It is a lovely community that we are building here…lessons for life perhaps?

Actually, I responded to your question on my blog and then developed it into a portion of my Tuesday post… Time is the biggest challenge and we have all had to make some adjustments… 🙂 I keep trying out new approaches and ideas to ease the sense of pending overwhelm.
As I said from the get go, brevity will be my new bbf once I get a handle on it. I was looking back at some of my older posts and Good Lord 🙂 they were very long! 500 words isn’t so bad especially as I am working on another project offline with a higher word count.

I am simultaneously lucky, and unlucky, to not be currently employed, as i have time to write a blog, but not much else…
Perhaps it is organizing my thoughts, and teaching me honest, pertinent lessons about life, but i still wonder if i can continue on in this way.

Hey, congratulations! As someone who has just started blogging and is also a technophobe (computers hate me, I am convinced) I definitely can get that feeling of apprehension as well as excitement.
While I am not doing the post a day challenge, I did challenge myself last November to blog more frequently (:) I even wrote a blog about it). I set in place reminders to post at least once a week, and have recently gone to 3 times (Wordless Wednesday & 5 Question Friday). With adding more post I have noticed more traffic and as you said encouraging words and a wonderful community of new & old friends. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

I love your idea of celebrating your birthday for the year. A friend of mine turned 50 last year and she made a pact to visit some where new every month and she had a few long weekends abroad with the girls.
I spent my 40th trying to escape from a marriage and have every intention of celebrating my 50th in a much more positive way – a few years off yet . . but nothing wrong with conducting ideas now 😉

Wow it was great to read that I am not alone. I didn’t sign up for the challenge because I am not sure I know what it all means yet, but I am blogging almost everyday. Mainly about love, relationships, parenthood, my heart art and their stories and about creating a perfect blend in life. I look forward connecting inspiring each other in the process. Whats funny is last week I had 169 people read my blog but only one person commented. It’s like standing in a room blind folded, with a ton of people listening to you talk, and only one person commented. But then when I talk to people on the phone they all rave about my Blogs. Weird! Hello! I came over because I loved your title – I also am a 1961 girl… haven’t quite hit the big “5-0” but it’s coming later this year – yikes!! I’ve been blogging for over 5 years – but only a month now on WordPress (I started out in the ‘wrong’ place, I guess!) I would say it has it’s ebbs and flows like everything else in life! I’ve had tons of people visit, read and comment, and lately… no one. For awhile, I had just quit altogether because life gets in the way sometimes! But, regardless, I enjoy it, somehow! I hope you have a great experience in the blogging world!
I can 100% relate! I feel like I am completely addicted and want to be on my laptop 24/7 reading, reseraching, writing, and commenting. My husband is not amused. My house looks like a disaster zone, but I’m having so much fun and I know this slight obsession will pass, so I’m enjoying the moment for now.

Thanks for your post about blogging and for offering up some inspiration. I have to post more and haven’t yet stepped up to the daily challenge. Perhaps reading blogs like yours will get me to that next step. So much thought goes into each post – i have the same trouble in thinking about length and substance.
I have been blogging for about five years now with WordPress on several poetry sites of my published work. No where else can you find a greater group of people than the WordPress family.
I set up my mom a wordpress blog…she uses it rather as homepage than as a blog. She is born in 1946 – most of her friends don’t even know how to use a track-pad…
I am super proud of her abilities to manage her own site, upload and edit images and so on… oh and: AAAAALLLLL domains with names of this generation are SUPER free!! nobody has ingridkurz.de – coz most Ingrids (not a popular German name in the last 40 years…) do not even have a fb account!
Haha, you’re so cute! Most things online are just that, you have to click around and read stuff and figure it out.
I find myself getting a little addicted to blogging as well. It definitely is a job keeping up with new ideas and reading other blogs as well.

Addictive it is, indeed. And a wonderful community, as well! As for posting daily, you may find that it replaces your morning vitamin (though it takes a bit longer), but it is fascinating to look back over a period of time – 6 months, a year – however long, and realize how much you’ve learned, who you’ve connected with, and what happens to the nature of your own observations and introspection.
Of course, the problem with a daily dose of writing for a year is that it’s hard to stop… without a 12-step program.

Celebrate your blog all you want! I remember how I first felt when I was new to a community of bloggers blogging about my favorite TV Show, but I was ever so surprised when they welcomed me with open arms and made me feel so much at home.
I’m not a blogging addict, the thing with me is, I blog when ideas hit me, and not just because I have to. I’m a part of Post a Week 2011, and I can tell you for sure that I’ve made more than one post a week, who’s there to stop me? There’s no restriction, and I might even start posting a day now!
WordPress has really, really helped bring together a tight community of people who love to write. It’s amazing what a nice circle this makes, and I’ve got many nice online friends now.

I have been blogging for years. You will find something to write about. I used to have lots of things to write about. Now…it is harder. Good luck with posting everyday, but if you don’t, once a week is good and you can always write posts and save them for later posting, so you can get other things done too.

Looking darn good for 50!). I have to admit, meeting people like you is truly inspiring. I, too, launched my blog at the beginning of the year but took on the weekly, not the daily, challenge. I feel like I’m lagging behind because I get this urge to write something almost daily. as I was reading through the words, I could feel how the things were when I started my blog last year. And many of them are the same today itself. Whenever I post something, more time is spent on checking the dashboard than what I have spent in developing the post. Even a single addition gives so much pleasure. And of course, joining this community has opened up our horizons as we interact with so many unknown people around the world-that’s something I really like.
You really write with passion, that’s why you blog has a strong energy, and comments we leave on your post motivate you and nurish your inner world so that you want to write again and again. Blogging is really observing. First you try it with fear, then the fear goes away, and it becomes your usual thing to do, but when you pass this stage, you feel blogging is involving you more and more.

I wasn’t very happy at the time though because I’d gone into a complete panic when I tried to read the instructions…it seemed like a foreign language and I needed my daughter to interpret for me. But she wasn’t having any of it…she is obviously a lot wiser than I’d given her credit for…bless her! 🙂
Congratulations on your Month of success and for doing it by yourself! Like your daughter, I have opted to encourage my mom to figure technology out herself and not rely on me to hold her hand through. As you may relate, she has found it more rewarding ing the end. Anyway, I signed up for the challenge 2 days ago, and I hope I have the same success and gain the same inner fulfillment you have found. Keep up the good work!

I trust that your Mum has now forgiven you for forcing her to figure out the technology herself. I forgave my daughter as soon I saw my first published post on screen. It was such a sense of satisfaction knowing that I had taught myself so much in a short space of time. I don’t know how I did actually!

I myself am new to blogging and it’s much like working for a newspaper or any other publication, only you are responsible for the lot. I guess what I mean is that blogs strive on fresh content and in order to keep this “fresh”, we may tend to reach further out from our daily lives. That can be a good thing i.e. go visit some place, attend an event and record it in your blog. The downside is that you are then obsessed with getting new material otherwise, like all publications, you can end up loosing your readers 🙂

Blogging once a day I know I can’t do. But I will try for once a week. And I think I’ve pretty much been able to. It’s fun to see other blogs and read all of them and it definitely takes a little time. I’m always excited when I figure out something new and how to do it. Like I say ” Never stop learning”. Good luck on your blog and once a day.
Blogging once a day is a real commitment and often means making lots of sacrifices to make the deadlines. Eventually I intend to get more organised about writing and scheduling my posts in advance. In the meantime, I will continue to type away into the early hours.
I know what you mean about the thrill of learning something new. My fellow bloggers have been brilliant in helping me to figure out how things word. Every week I learn something new…and I love it!
